Hi Amy, It’s never too late…and that is actually one of the things I like about Substack. You can always just dig into a particular writer and read past posts. So….thank you for the sweet wishes. Cooling down and that is the best medicine!

Alecia, I'm so sorry to hear about this! I loved the way you wrote about it though, the circle of men, the boy saying, "Good luck," (which sounded like such a blessing!). And this experience of medicine and care in another country. I can't get enough stories right now of people being sweet to each other, and reading your piece was a lovely part of my day. Thank you for giving me something to read about besides Jeff Bezo's wedding, about which I want to hear NOTHING. Zero.

I hope you recover easily and fully!

And I can not believe the cost of the whole thing. A-mazing.

Hi Rebecca,

Oh, don’t we need to be reminded of the goodness in humanity! So so dark. I just read the news about the Big Beautiful Bill. Thank you so much for reading…and your note. So nice to hear from you!

Hey Diana, Thank you - so sweet of you. I certainly understand!!!! Oh, it is only darker there by the hour. It's quite beautiful to live in a place where there is a collective value of care for each other. I couldn't live in the US now. It would break my heart daily. It's hard enough to be here reading about it. I'm afraid it will make people numb. Because how else do we deal with it? Anyway...I have a similar story in Denmark. She was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (the acute gives away the seriousness and quick onset) while visiting her best friend from college who is Danish American and living there. they saved my daughter's life and hospitalized her for 30 days and 30 nights, only releasing her back to the US when she was safe to travel again. I will never forget it or be able to even talk about it , like this , without wanting to weep with gratitude. There is goodness. Are you able to stay cool???? This is the hardest part with a cast. But we are doing ok!!!

It is so American!!!!!!! Vulgarity. I guess it's truly another gilded age in America, but so so gross. Well, have your own beautiful evening!

I'm so sorry that you broke your ankle, Alicia!!! I hope you you understand it correctly when I say I'm happy that if you had to break it that you did so in Italy and not on in the states. Dear God.

During our BnB years, we had guests from England that had a little boy who tumbled down our stone steps and cracked his head open. On a Sunday. He was scooped up and brought to the Pronto Soccorso of our local hospital where he was x-rayed, stitched, held for four hours in case of a concussion. The head of pediatrics was called in and determined he could be released.

They asked for the family 's name and country. That was it (back then, maybe 2007 or 8). Not a penny or a form changed hands. These Brits were completely blown away.

Italy can be a pain in the arse but it can be amazing. I'm happy you got to experience another piece of the amazing part.

Big hugs and buona guarigione.

oh nooooo! Alecia, poor baby! What a thing to have happen, though it made quite the riveting tale!! I am so happy those protectors found their way to you with their nectar water. I love how you always come through things with such grace. Please baby that ankle. I'm sending you and Lee all the love.

Ciao, mia bella amica! Aww...thank you. I woke up this morning thinking about you - that I wanted to write to tell you I won't be coming in July because of this. I'll have to come a little later. It was classic Italian fare, always entertaining to be in the presence of the citizens of Pistoia! Much love to you and Mark. We sure miss you two.

Wow, such a confluence of coincidences -- on your way to register for Italian health insurance and just having learned new Italian, medical vocabulary for “I fell” and “Emergency Room” ! I guess reality is truly stranger than fiction. And even in a stressful moment, you have managed to maintain your wonderful storytelling gift. You are a treasure and your readers are so glad that the protectors were there for you. Wishing you a smooth and gentle recovery.

Such a compelling read. I wish you patience, humour and good reading as you heal. If you haven’t read Elizabeth Jane Howard’s series The Cazalet Chronicles maybe you could find them. Five very fat books. Love to you!!
